1
COMMUNICATE YOUR TIMELINE
The time between receiving your samples and sending images to retailers can be tight. It’s important that your timeline is communicated clearly with your photographer so they know when the images are needed, and can book their editing time in accordingly. This is especially important when there are changes in the lead up to the shoot. Issues with late or incorrect samples should be communicated so shoot dates can be moved or time can be allocated to photoshop corrections to garments.
2
PLAN A VISUAL STYLE
Lookbook photography doesn’t have to be on a white background. There’s a variety of textures, materials and colours to choose from in most studios or alternatively you can shoot on location. Discuss your brands unique look and feel with your photographer and collaborate to find a photographic style that suits your brand.
Another key factor to consider is the end use of the images. Are they purely being used digitally or will they be printed in physical lookbooks too? Will the images stand alone or do they need to fit in with an existing style?

ASSEMBLE YOUR TEAM
MAKEUP ARTISTS
It’s important to note that makeup for fashion photography is very different to stage or wedding makeup. Make sure you hire a makeup artist that has experience in the fashion industry as there are specific products and styles that are suited for studio lighting.
MODELS
When selecting models it’s important to hire experienced fashion models. You may have a friend that has the perfect look for your brand however, it’s likely they don’t have the stamina of a professional model. Models are required to wear hundreds of outfits in one day and to pose consistently and on brand for up to ten hours so it’s not a task that simply anyone can do.
INTERNAL TEAM
There’s multiple roles on a photoshoot that your internal team (fashion designers, production assistants etc) will need to be in charge of. Make sure each team member is clear on their responsibilities and knows how to fufill their tasks before the shoot day. A well oiled team produces awesome results. Here are some examples of the roles an internal team would take on board during a shoot:
Steaming garments.
Organising clothing racks.
Organising shoes.
Checking the models make up.
Handing models their next outfit.
Reviewing and selecting images.
Ordering and picking up food for the team.
Pouring coffees and drinks.
CREATE BUFFER
When planning your shoot day it’s key to allow extra buffer time for each stage of the process. Your team won’t perform well if they feel under the pump or overworked. Make sure you also schedule in morning tea and lunch breaks to give everyone time to recharge.
It’s important to be realistic when estimating the number of outfits that can be captured in one shoot day. We find that by using two models we can shoot more efficiently throughout the day. Below is an example of a general shoot day timeline:
7:30am - Models, hair and makeup artists, fashion team and photographer arrive at shoot location to set up.
9am - Photoshoot starts.
10:30am - Morning tea break.
1pm - Lunch break.
5pm - wrap
KEEP THE TEAM FED
Photoshoots require a lot of energy. It’s important you keep your team topped up with snacks and drinks throughout the day and healthy meals for breaks. Drowsiness can cause mistakes to happen, for good results and a streamlined day, keeping the team fed is key.

QUICK GARMENT CHANGES
Organise your garments on the rack so they’re in order of the shoot day. The quicker the garment changes the better. We recommend working with two models so that one can be on camera while the other is getting changed. Moving garments to a finished rack will ensure you know what has been photographed and what hasn’t.

SELECT AS YOU SHOOT
A tether system gives you a live preview of the imagery and also allows you to make your image selections. This gives you more control over the imagery, if you see something that needs changing, you can direct the team accordingly.
A tethered system is the industry standard for fashion photography but it’s still worth making sure your selected photographer has the technical capability to do this.
